09/04/2008 - Crans Montana, Switzerland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, the 19-year-old former amateur star, fired an eight-under 63 on Thursday to take the lead after the first round of the European Masters.

McIlroy birdied eight of his final 14 holes and held a three-shot lead over Argentina's Julio Zapata and Welshmen Garry Houston and Kyron Sullivan.

Four-under 67 was a popular score at the picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre course, with defending champion Brett Rumford leading eight players who shared fifth place on that number.

Eight more players, including European Ryder Cup team member Miguel Angel Jimenez, posted matching three-under 68s to round out the list of 19 players who finished within five shots of the young leader.

McIlroy, the 2006 European Amateur champion, collected nine total birdies on Thursday to post his lowest round since he turned professional almost a year ago in the midst of a coming-out year that included his opening-round 68 in the British Open.

Despite making just one bogey to go with all of those birdies, the young Ulsterman wasn't necessarily 100 percent pleased with his round.

"Golf's such a fickle game," said McIlroy, who turned pro after playing on the losing Great Britain & Ireland team at last year's Walker Cup. "I could go and play better than that and shoot level par."

Although there is only one round in the books, McIlroy could wind up making a little history if he can hang on to win this weekend.

Only two players younger than him have ever earned a title on the European Tour: Dale Hayes, who was 18 years and 290 days old when he won the 1971 Spanish Open; and Hall of Famer Seve Ballesteros, a three-time European Masters champion, who was 121 days past his 19th birthday when he claimed the 1976 Dutch Open.

McIlroy turned 19 years old on May 4 of this year -- 123 days before he teed off on Thursday.

Despite a string of good finishes at the end of last season -- including two top-fives -- McIlroy has struggled to make cuts in his first full year as a professional.

He has missed each of the last three weekends, and six of the last nine overall since posting a seventh-place finish at the Irish Open in May.

"I've done a lot of work in the last few weeks [because] I've had a lot of time on my hands at weekends," said McIlroy. "I feel like I've been hitting it really well, but the results have not shown it."

Thursday, the results were there.

Among McIlroy's birdie holes was the 598-yard 14th -- his fifth hole -- where he hit driver and eight-iron to set up the second of his nine birdies. Later, he would birdie three consecutive holes near the end of the round to take a solid lead heading into the clubhouse.

McIlroy, playing on the mountain course for the first time this week, said he enjoys how far the ball goes in the thin air. He called it a "fun course."

"As a kid I always played by feel...and here whatever it looks like you just go for it," he said.

In part two of MySportsbook.com’s draft preview, we’ll take a look at a division that was extremely disappointing last season: the NFC South.  Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC.  The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game.  For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft.  Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.

1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign?  New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1.  Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT.  Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season.  With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round.  LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems.  If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season.  The Falcons have been plenty busy during the off season with plenty of players coming and going including a new head coach.  The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub.  High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career.  With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season.  The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age.  It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot.  This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.

Big Ten Conference odds

Teams that should be in: Michigan State, Indiana
Work left to do: Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa

Behind the big two, the pecking order might be in a bit of flux. Has Michigan State passed Indiana after handling the Hoosiers in East Lansing? Where is Illinois in that mix? What looked like a four-big league last week could be morphing into five -- and even six is not unthinkable at this point if everything breaks right.

Should be in:

Michigan State [21-8 (8-6), RPI: 20, SOS: 15] The Spartans made it four-for-four on the homestand, a gigantic accomplishment that leaves them in extremely good shape. MSU is only 1-6 on the road and is at Michigan and at Wisconsin to close things out, meaning the date with the Wolverines on Tuesday looms very, very large. Beating Texas early will hold up well, as will the rout of Bradley and the win over BYU, but will 8-8 be enough? It very well could be, as the computer numbers are good, but why chance it?

Indiana [18-9 (8-6), RPI: 24, SOS: 32] Hmm ... good thing the last two are at Northwestern and home to Penn State, because IU might want to get both to feel completely safe after dropping its third in the last four, fading after halftime at Michigan State. Who knew the best nonconference win would be over Southern Illinois, which is a gift that keeps on giving for the Hoosiers. The win over Wisconsin also looks good on the mantel.

Work left to do:

Illinois [21-9 (9-6), RPI: 31, SOS: 25] A good performance at Penn State leaves the Illini in pretty good shape. Can they go to Iowa and take care of business to really look on their way? That's a huge game, as there is a possible cluster of teams that will end at 9-7. Illinois beat Bradley, but has lost to Xavier. A 9-7 mark and a semifinals trip in Chicago could be enough with the computer profile hanging in there, but it would be better not to mess around, clinching at least a tie for third.

Purdue [18-10 (7-7), RPI: 47, SOS: 28] Couldn't get it done at Iowa, but did win at Northwestern to put 9-7 squarely in sight. Where does that leave the Boilermakers, though? Even if they beat Minnesota and Northwestern at home, that won't help the computer numbers. Nonconference wins over Virginia, DePaul and Oklahoma are solid, but not spectacular. The Boilers very well might need an upset in the B10 quarters to have a legit claim.

Michigan [19-10 (7-7), RPI: 55, SOS: 53] Well, Michigan did what it needed to do, winning at Minnesota to take control of its fate. The Wolverines have Michigan State and an already-wrapped-up-the-league Ohio State at home to close, so the chances are there. Win both and we can talk. There is no marquee win yet in the profile, and the Wolverines were splattered in several games against name opponents. A mediocre computer profile fueled by a lack of road wins isn't helping, either.

Iowa [16-12 (8-6), RPI: 80, SOS: 64] For the sake of being complete, we'll add Iowa, this season's Stanford. It's plausible that the Hawkeyes could get to 10-6 (at Penn State, vs. Illinois left), but where does that leave them after a gruesome nonconference performance where the best win was over ... Toledo? Iowa State? Cornell?? If they get to 10-6, we can start to look at what they need to do in the B10 tourney, although my gut sense is that they would need to make the final and have knocked off Ohio State or Wisconsin on the way to have any real claim.
