02/18/2007 - Oahu, HI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Paula Creamer returned to the winner's circle on the LPGA Tour Saturday when she holed a long birdie putt on the 17th hole to capture the SBS Open at Turtle Bay.
"I'm glad I won and it's a relief off my shoulders," acknowledged Creamer, who had not won since two victories in her 2005 LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year season. "I just hope it's a good season and I know I've worked hard. Hopefully, I will be standing here a couple more times."
The birdie at 17 helped Creamer to a round of two-under 70. She finished at nine-under-par 207, which was good enough for a one-stroke victory over Julieta Granada.
Granada got into a share of the lead thanks to a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole. She reached eight-under par for the championship, then had to watch as Creamer, playing in the final group, finished her final two holes.
The par-four 17th was ranked as the most difficult at the Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort, and Creamer played the hole cautiously. She knocked her second shot 40 feet right of the flag, but holed the unlikely birdie try.
That gave her a one-shot margin with the par-five finishing hole and Creamer laid up with her second. She hit a decent third shot into the green, but two- putted for the win at the season-opener.
"We got it in the hole and I told Colin (her caddy), 'let's get it to the barn as fast as we can,'" joked Creamer, who pocketed $165,000 for the victory. "A win is a win."
For Granada, this runner-up finish is an extension of a strong couple of months of play. She won the $1 million first-prize check at the ADT Championship at the end of 2006, then helped Paraguay to win the Women's World Cup of Golf.
"I gave her a run," said Granada. "Winning gives you more confidence. I'm thinking let's go out and win, instead of a top 10. I did the best I could today."
Karrie Webb, who won back-to-back tournaments in Australia recently, shot a two-under 70 and took third place at six-under-par 210.
Morgan Pressel, who shared the overnight lead with Creamer and Sherri Steinhauer, was in the hunt until the back nine. She finished with a two-over 74 and tied for fourth place with reigning Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa (71) and Janice Moodie (72) at minus-five.
Creamer parred her first three holes on Saturday, then went on a birdie tear to move clearly into the lead. She tallied birdies at four and five, then drained a 20-footer for three in a row at the sixth. Creamer actually made it four in a row when she kicked in a short one at seven.
Creamer missed a seven-footer for par at the eighth, but reclaimed the lost stroke thanks to a birdie at the par-five ninth, a hole she birdied all three rounds.
Speaking of holes that Creamer played consistently, the par-four 11th fits the bill. Unfortunately, Creamer continued to play it poorly. She bogeyed No. 11 on Friday, but things got worse on Saturday. An errant drive into a hazard led to a double-bogey and suddenly the tournament was up for grabs.
Granada inched closer thanks to an eagle at seven and birdies at 12 and 15. When Creamer bogeyed the 13th thanks to a missed five-footer for par, the lead was only one.
Creamer holed a beautiful par save from six feet at the 15th, then missed an eight-foot birdie putt at the next hole. Granada sank her birdie putt at the closing hole, but Creamer won it with the long try at 17.
"It was a roller-coaster. I can't even explain it," said Creamer.
Hee-Won Han posted a two-over 74 and finished alone in seventh place at minus- four. Steinhauer, the current Women's British Open champion, only managed a four-over 76 to tie for ninth place with Stacy Prammanasudh (70) at three- under-par 213.
