Jags' road woes resurface

Football Betting Lines

12/19/2006 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Jacksonville Jaguars' season has been such a roller coaster ride this season that one could get motion sickness just by looking at the results.

The biggest contributing factor to the Jags lack of consistency has been their inability to win on the road. With this week's loss in Tennessee, Jack Del Rio's club fell to 2-5 as the visiting club this season. To make matters worse, four of those road setbacks have come against teams with .500 records or worse.

The loss in Houston was a bad one, as was the overtime setback in Washington, but this week's meltdown in the Music City may have been the worst of the bunch.

Forget how hot the Titans are right now with their five-game winning streak, and how quarterback Vince Young has re-energized the franchise. Neither Young nor the Titans were hot on Sunday, as they managed just 98 yards of total offense.

It was the second-fewest yards ever surrendered by the Jaguars, but Jacksonville still managed to make enough mistakes to allow Tennessee to earn the 24-17 victory.

"It was a game in which we pretty much beat ourselves," Jags quarterback David Garrard said.

Garrard can take the blame for many of the mistakes in this week's loss, as he lost a fumble and threw three interceptions and ended the game with a QB rating of 53.1.

It was actually the third-lowest passer rating in eight starts this season for Garrard, whose inconsistency resembles that of his team. Overall this year, the former East Carolina quarterback has thrown eight TDs and eight interceptions.

"My first impression is that he (Garrard) was trying to do too much," Del Rio said. "With our defense, we're not in must-score mode on every series. I got the impression he was pressing to score on every series."

Garrard's miscues led directly to 21 points for the Titans, who scored three defensive touchdowns in the game.

With regular starter Byron Leftwich out for the rest of the season after undergoing ankle surgery, the Jaguars are forced to sink or swim with Garrard.

The good thing for Jacksonville fans is that Del Rio usually follows up one of these disappointing losses with a surprising win. It will be difficult to continue that trend this weekend, as the Jaguars welcome Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to town.

A PLAYOFF TEAM NO MORE?

A win this weekend in Tennessee would have greatly aided the Jaguars' postseason chances, but the team will probably need some help to get in now.

But while the setback certainly didn't help Jacksonville's playoff dreams, the team is still in the middle of the race.

The Jags are part of a group of four 8-6 teams vying for the AFC Wild Card. Cincinnati and Denver are currently the teams in that pack holding the two Wild Card slots, but Jacksonville knows anything can happen in the final two weeks of the regular season.

"We're promised two more weeks. If we get enough done in the next two weeks, then we will have earned it," Del Rio. "We're not going to walk out of here with our heads hanging."

Del Rio is trying to lead the Jaguars to consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since the club made the playoffs in four straight seasons from 1996-99.

THE RUNNING MEN

The Jaguars have worked the dual running back approach to perfection this season, and the strategy has resulted in some club records for Jacksonville.

Behind the performances of veteran Fred Taylor and rookie Maurice Jones-Drew, the Jags have managed 2,293 total rushing yards this season, breaking the mark set in 1998.

Jacksonville rushed for 202 yards in Sunday's game against the Titans, despite the fact that it was without Taylor for most of the game. Taylor aggravated his right hamstring in the opening quarter and never returned to the game.

Drew was forced to be the main threat, and wound up with 98 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 25 carries. He extended his club record for consecutive games with a TD, as he made it into the end zone for the sixth straight game.

The Jaguars will host the Patriots next Sunday in their final home game of the season.
