11/26/2008 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Alexander Ovechkin recorded his sixth career hat trick and added an assist, as the Washington Capitals topped the Atlanta Thrashers, 5-3, in a Southeast Division battle at the Verizon Center.
Viktor Kozlov scored a goal and chipped in two assists, while Eric Fehr also scored for Washington, which snapped a three-game slide and improved to 8-0-1 at home this season. Jose Theodore needed just 15 saves to pick up the win.
Bryan Little and Slava Kozlov each had a power-play goal for Atlanta, which has dropped four of five. Ondrej Pavelec allowed all five goals on 33 shots in defeat.
The Caps got off to a quick start with three goals in the first period. At the 3:29 mark with a man-advantage, Ovechkin fired a one-timer from the point past Pavelec, and four minutes later Fehr finished off a 3-on-1 break with a goal and a 2-0 lead.
With Washington's Nicklas Backstrom in the penalty box for tripping, Ilya Kovalchuk ripped a slap shot from the point and Little got the Thrashers on the board by knocking in the rebound for his 10th goal of the season with a 7:52 to play in the first.
Less than two minutes later, Viktor Kozlov's shot deflected off an Atlanta defenseman's skate and slid directly to Ovechkin at the left doorstep for the easy put-away past an off-balanced Pavelec.
The reigning Hart Memorial Trophy winner capped the hat trick just 54 seconds into the second period, registering a power-play goal on a wrister for a 4-1 edge.
Atlanta mimicked its first goal with 6:54 left in the second frame, as Slava Kozlov gathered a rebound off a Kovalchuk shot from the point and netted the power-play tally.
The score remained 4-2 until Viktor Kozlov found himself on a breakaway early in the third and went top shelf over Pavelec's left shoulder.
Nathan Oystrick recorded his first career NHL goal with 7:32 to play in the game, cutting Atlanta's deficit to 5-3, but Theodore was up to the task the rest of the way to seal the win.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
