11/29/2008 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Philly Classic wraps up tonight, with the 20th-ranked Villanova Wildcats clashing with the Rhode Island Rams in the title game at The Palestra.
The Wildcats have won all five of their games on the young season and that includes the last three in this tournament. Most recently, Villanova downed Towson, 64-47, at The Palestra last night. Prior to that game, the Wildcats hosted the first two rounds of this event and captured victories over Niagara (77-62) and Monmouth (71-48).
As for URI, it too has five wins on the season, but with one loss at nationally-ranked Duke (82-79) on November 16th. Since that setback, the Rams have run off four straight wins, including a 77-72 triumph of Penn State on Friday. The win improved the team to 3-0 in this event, with its other wins coming against Monmouth (85-62) and Hartford (94-72).
Tonight's contest marks the seventh all-time meeting between URI and Villanova and the Wildcats own a 4-2 edge in the series.
The Rams made good on 48.1 percent of their shots from the floor and 7-of-15 from beyond the arc, as they outlasted Penn State last night. The team also found success at the charity stripe, where it converted on 18-of-22 tries. Jimmy Baron drained 4-of-6 long-range attempts and he finished with 20 points to pace URI. Keith Cothran delivered 18 points, while Kahiem Seawright posted 16 points and eight boards. On the season, Baron leads the club in scoring at 18.5 ppg and he is shooting 59.0 percent from long distance. Cothran has provided a nice complement to him with 17.8 ppg and Seawright adds 13.0 ppg and 6.2 rpg to the mix. Overall, URI has shown it can score at a high rate, averaging 83.8 ppg on the year.
The Wildcats did it with defense last night, holding Towson to a dismal 32.7 percent shooting effort from the floor in a 64-47 win. Villanova made 43.4 percent of its total shots, in addition to winning the battle on the boards, 43-35. Scottie Reynolds led the charge with an all-around effort of 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Antonio Pena and Dante Cunningham had 12 points and seven rebounds apiece, while Corey Fisher chipped in with 11 points. On the season, Cunningham not only tops the roster in scoring at 17.2 ppg, but rebounding as well, with 6.8 rpg. Reynolds has done a little of everything, as he contributes 13.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg and a team-best 5.0 apg. Corey Stokes puts forth 12.8 ppg and Fisher contributes 11.4 ppg. As a team, Villanova has fared well at each end of the court, scoring 79.4 ppg and limiting its foes to just 57.0 ppg.

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. With a chance to tie last week’s game with the Baltimore Ravens betting, He elected to go for the two-point conversion and outright victory. The conversion failed, and the Pats ended up falling to the Ravens by a 16-15 final count.
New England rolled off twelve unanswered points to give it a chance at securing the victory, but it never threatened to cover the 3.5-point spread. NFL bettors saw this one coming, as they bet the Ravens down from +6 to +3.5 as the week progressed. QB Tom Brady didn’t take part in the Patriots first preseason clash, but could see action this weekend.
His three replacements all put up embarrassing numbers. They went a combined 17 for 33, and threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The New England defense was encouraging, as they held the Ravens to 2/12 third down conversions and surrendered just ten first downs. That ‘D’ should be bolstered with the addition of former Bucs and Denver Broncos betting safety John Lynch, who could make his Patriots debut on Sunday against his former mates.
HC Jon Gruden had to be impressed with the way his Bucs played on both sides of the ball in their dominating 17-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1’s NFL pre-season betting action. Bucs bettors were quite happy with the effort, as they made a mockery of the fact that they were underdogs in the game.
The logjam at the quarterback position didn’t get any easier to separate for Gruden, as all four of his QBs had positive experiences in the first exhibition of 2008. The four combined to complete 28 of their 40 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, and that was without starting QB Jeff Garcia in the lineup.
RB Michael Bennett had 19 carries and four receptions, totaling 90 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see more of Bennett, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham, as they all compete for playing time with Warrick Dunn in the backfield this season. Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.
First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.
The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.
These two teams hooked up last year in Tampa Bay, with the Bucs winning that game 13-10. The Buccaneers have only lost one preseason game at home dating back to the beginning of the ’05 preseason. The Patriots have had a mixed bag of results in their recent exhibitions. They have gone 2-2 ATS and SU each of the last three years.
New England currently sits as modest 1-point favorites in this preseason showdown with the ‘total’ now sitting at 34.5.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.
Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.
According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).
Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.
''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''
Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.
Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.
''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''
Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.
Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.
”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''
The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
