Rizzuto dead at 89

08/14/2007 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Yankees Hall of Famer and legendary broadcaster Phil Rizzuto died on Tuesday morning. He was 89.

The former Yankee shortstop and 1950 MVP made an equally big name on the airwaves, calling some of the biggest moments for the most storied franchise in baseball for 40 years.

He called Roger Maris' record-breaking 61st home run in 1961, as well as Chris Chambliss' pennant-winning home run in the 1976 American League Championship Series.

Nicknamed "Scooter", Rizzuto was known for his malapropisms and signature phrases, the most famous being "Holy Cow!".

A Brooklyn, New York native, Rizzuto was selected by his hometown team as an amateur free agent in 1937. The shortstop made his major-league debut in 1941, and went on to play 13 pro seasons alongside such legends as Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford.

Rizzuto was a runaway winner for the 1950 MVP after scoring 125 runs and batting .324, and was a runner-up for the award the year prior. A five- time All-Star, Rizzuto had a career .273 batting average with 38 homers, 563 RBI and 877 runs scored.

All of those accomplishments came despite the fact that he served in the Navy during World War II from 1943-45, forcing him to miss each of those seasons.
