Roma rolls over Lecce

Soccer Betting Lines

11/23/2008 - Lecce, Italy (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Roma kept its momentum going on Sunday with a comfortable 3-0 over Lecce at Stadio Via del Mare, taking its current unbeaten streak to four games in all competitions.

Mirko Vucinic, Juan and Francesco Totti each bagged a goal for Roma, which still sits in the bottom half of the table after a terrible start to the season, while Lecce sits one point below Roma and only one clear of the relegation zone.

Roma was on top from the start with the team creating a couple of decent chances before taking the lead 11 minutes into the match.

Totti set up the goal with a neat pass to Vucinic, who beat Lecce goalkeeper Francesco Benussi with a left-footed shot that found its way into the bottom corner.

The hosts managed to test Roma goalkeeper Doni on a few occasions following the goal from Vucinic, but it was the visitors who doubled their lead midway through the half when Matteo Brighi's shot was deflected to a wide-open Juan, who easily finished for his first goal of the campaign.

Brighi had a hand in the third goal as well when he won the ball in midfield and sent Totti on a run towards goal that culminated with the striker chipping the ball over the head of Benussi in the 49th minute.

There was no way back into the game for Lecce, and they almost yielded a fourth goal when Totti set up Vucinic for a header that beat the keeper but came back off the post.

AC Milan got goals from Alexandre Pato and Ronaldinho, but settled for a 2-2 tie against Torino to slip three points back of Inter Milan.

Antonio Cassano scored two goals in a 3-0 win for Sampdoria over Catania, Napoli was held to a 2-2 draw by Cagliari, preventing the team from moving into the top three, while Reggina got two goals from Bernardo Corradi in a 3-1 victory against Atalanta.

Palermo salvaged a point at Bologna when Davide Succi scored in stoppage time to give his team a 1-1 draw, Siena converted a pair of penalty kicks in the final seven minutes to beat Chievo 2-0 and Lazio grabbed a 1-1 draw when Ousmane Dabo's long-range effort found its way past Genoa goalkeeper Rubinho.

SPORTS BETTING

NFL Football Betting Online

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.

It is called the "pointspread."

Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.

But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.

A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.

In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.

The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere.
