11/28/2008 - Anaheim, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Two teams trying to keep their perfect records intact hit the floor of the Anaheim Convention Center tonight, as the Baylor Bears clash with the 14th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils in second-round action of the 76 Classic.
The Sun Devils are 4-0 for just the third time in the last 22 seasons and are trying to make it to 5-0 for the first time since 1985-86. On Thursday, the Sun Devils breezed through the first round of the tournament with a lopsided 84-56 win versus Charlotte. Except for a 59-52 victory over San Diego State back on November 18th, ASU has won every game by at least 16 points thus far.
Meanwhile, Baylor has been tossed quite a number of softballs in the early going (Paul Quinn, Centenary, Southern, Jacksonville) but managed to come up big in the 72-56 beating of Providence in the first round yesterday.
As far as the all-time series is concerned, ASU has won two of the previous three meetings between the programs with the most recent of those coming in 1988. The matchup in Richmond, Virginia that season took place right around Thanksgiving as well, with the Sun Devils picking up an 89-73 triumph.
The winner of this contest will play the winner of the UTEP/Wake Forest game in the championship tilt on Sunday.
The Sun Devils went from shooting 60 percent from the field in the first half to 61.9 percent in the second as they easily crushed Charlotte by 28 points on Thursday. The squad did turn the ball over 20 times, but made up for those miscues by converting 8-of-16 beyond the arc and outscoring the 49ers 26-9 at the free-throw line. Jeff Pendergraph posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 boards, followed by James Harden with 15 points on a perfect 11-of-11 effort at the stripe. Ty Abbott checked in with 14 points and Jerren Shipp 10 off the bench. Except for the fact that he has made just 2-of-14 shots out on the perimeter, Harden is the sort of player who can do it all for the Sun Devils from his 22.5 ppg, to 6.0 rpg and 4.3 apg. Pendergraph and Abbott account for 11.5 and 11.3 ppg, respectively, and are both responsible for 5.8 rpg, but the former could stand to improve upon his one assist through four games thus far.
The Bears held Providence to a mere 22.6 percent shooting from the field in the first half last night and then just cruised from there to the easy win. Kevin Rogers scored a team-best 16 points, leading four players in double figures before fouling out, and added seven rebounds to his stat line for Baylor. LaceDarius Dunn converted only 1-of-7 behind the three-point line but still chipped in 12 points off the bench, followed by Tweety Carter and Curtis Jerrells with 11 points apiece. Although he has come off the bench in two of five games thus far, Dunn still leads the program in scoring with his 16.2 ppg, one of five players hitting for double digits at the moment. Jerrells contributes 15.8 ppg to the cause and is one of the more accurate three-point shooters for the group at 41.7 percent. Just as important as his scoring, Jerrells also averages just over six assists per game in order to keep his teammates involved and scoring a whopping 86.2 ppg.
