01/06/2007 - Clemson, SC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 23rd-ranked Clemson Tigers continue their magical 2006-07 season this weekend, when they play host to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in ACC action from Littlejohn Coliseum.
The Tigers are a perfect 15-0 this season and join top-ranked UCLA as the only undefeated teams in Division I basketball. It marks the second longest win streak in school history. The Tigers opened ACC play on Wednesday, escaping Tallahassee with a 68-66 decision against Florida State.
The Yellow Jackets are another up-and-coming program in the conference and come into this game with an 11-3 overall record. Tech has won five straight games, including three routs in the row against Troy, St. Francis (Pa) and most recently, Winston-Salem State (97-46). The Yellow Jackets opened conference play back on December 3rd, dropping a 90-82 decision at Miami.
The Tigers lead the all-time series with Georgia Tech 55-52, including a 26-8 edge in games played at Clemson. The Tigers won both meetings last season.
The Yellow Jackets have not exactly played top-notch competition of late, but have looked impressive nonetheless, including the recent lopsided victory over Winston-Salem State. Tech held the Rams to a mere .288 shooting. In addition, Tech forced 19 turnovers and won the battle on the boards, 47-31. Anthony Morrow led six Yellow Jackets in double figures, scoring 21 points in 17 minutes of work off the bench. Point guard Javaris Crittenton just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine assists. The team as a whole racked up 27 assists, while turning the ball over just eight times. The Yellow Jackets are a young team, but have plenty of offensive firepower, averaging 85.1 ppg, while converting on over 50 percent from the field. Freshman Thaddeus Young currently leads three players in double figures with 14.2 ppg. Crittenton, another freshman, is one of the top newcomers in the conference. He is both a threat shooting the ball (13.3 ppg) and distributing (6.0 apg). Lewis Clinch was the third double-digit threat (13.2 ppg), but he is done for the season for a violation of institution policy. Both Jeremis Smith (9.9 ppg) and Ra'Sean Dickey (8.2 ppg) will need to step up in Clinch's absence.
One look at the stat line and it is easy to see why Clemson is one of just two undefeated teams in basketball. The Tigers are getting it done at both ends of the court, averaging 77.5 ppg, on .480 shooting. Defensively, the squad is yielding just 59.5 ppg, while holding foes under 40 percent shooting (.399). K.C. Rivers has come off the bench all year long, but still leads the team in scoring at 14.6 ppg. James Mays is the big body down low, adding 12.5 ppg, while pacing the team on the boards (7.4 rpg). Vernon Hamilton (11.5 ppg), Cliff Hammonds (10.1 ppg) and Trevor Booker (10.0 ppg) provide plenty of scoring depth. Hammonds' layup with seconds remaining provided the difference to help Clemson remain unbeaten on the season. Hamilton led the way offensively with 19 points. He was joined in double digits by Rivers and Mays with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
