11/29/2008 - Denver, CO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Wojtek Wolski netted a pair of goals, and David Jones got the game-winner, as Colorado rode a three-goal first period and held on to top Tampa Bay, 4-3, at Pepsi Center.
Jordan Leopold scored the other goal for the Avalanche, winners in three of five. In only his second start this month, Andrew Raycroft earned his third win of the season -- his first since October 18 -- with a 17-save effort.
Vincent Lecavalier, Ryan Malone and Steven Stamkos tallied a goal and one assist each for the Lightning, who have lost four in a row.
Starter Olaf Kolzig was pulled after allowing three goals on 10 shots through the first 20 minutes. Mike Smith filled in valiantly, allowing one goal on 21 shots over the final two periods.
A costly give-away by Smith gave Colorado a 4-1 lead. His attempted clear hit the stick of the Avs' Cody McCormick and slowed down enough for Jones to gather it in the slot. He made two stick moves before tucking a backhander into the net 3:42 into the third period.
Tampa was unbowed, though, and collected a pair of power-play goals to come within one late.
Malone's deft deflection of Steve Eminger's point shot cut the deficit to two with 10:41 left, and after McCormick earned a double-minor for high sticking, Stamkos converted from the slot with 4:29 to play for a 4-3 contest
The visitors' comeback effort was hampered by a penalty to Paul Ranger with 2:16 to play, and the Avalanche held on for the victory.
Leopold's fourth of the season -- a power-play marker -- got the Avs on the board with 4:40 remaining in the first period. He took a Marek Svatos feed and beat Kolzig with a wrister high and inside the right post.
Wolski then hit the net twice before the end of the frame 1:36 apart at even strength for a 3-0 Colorado advantage.
Smith spelled Kolzig at the start of the second and had to be sharp to hold the home club at bay on an early power play chance. He stoned Milan Hejduk with six minutes played, and the momentum changed slightly when Lecavalier's right-circle blast hit the net with 7:43 to play.
